With hundreds of fragrances on the market, and more being added each year, selecting the perfect fragrance for yourself or someone else can be quite an undertaking! Understanding the composition of a fragrance can help narrow down the selection. Are you looking for a strong fragrance that will last throughout the day or would you rather wear a lighter scent?

In women's fragrances, perfume is traditionally the strongest with more than 20 percent essential oils followed by Eau de perfume, Eau de toilette and cologne. Eau de Fraiche is the weakest of all fragrances with only one to three percent essential oils. However, the other types of fragrances are much more common than Eau de Fraiche.

A Few Notes about Fragrance

Another factor to consider when selecting a fragrance is the variety of scents used to create the fragrance. Fragrances are typically formulated by layering three scents, or notes. The top note lasts the least amount of time, the middle note lasts a little longer and acts as the source of the main scent and the base note lasts around 24 hours. With most fragrances, you'll smell the top note first, then the scent will change and you'll notice the middle note a few hours later. Therefore, when selecting a fragrance it is important to test it for a full 24 hours to make sure you enjoy each note throughout the course of the day.
